Ghana’s President John Atta Mills died unexpectedly Tuesday after being rushed to the hospital Monday night. The 68-year-old leader’s death was reported to be “sudden and untimely” in the statement signed by presidential chief of staff John Henry Martey Newman.

Vice president, John Dramani Mahama was sworn into office late Tuesday, making him the fourth president of Ghana. According to Information Minister Fritz Baffour, Mahama will serve as President elections are over at the end of the year.

According to the Associated Press, During Atta Mills election in 2008, he promoted change for his country and people as a platform for his campaign.

“People are complaining. They’re saying that their standard of living has deteriorated these past eight years,” he said. “So if Ghana is a model of growth, it’s not translating into something people can feel.”

As Ghana continues to mourn the passing of a unique leader, I hope the country continues to succeed though Mahama’s leadership.
